Birkbeck University of London is a public research university located in Bloomsbury, London. It was established in 1823 as the Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution by philanthropist William Jones, who had been made a Baronet for his services to education. The institution became a college in 1887 and gained its present name after being granted a royal charter in 1966.
Today it has more than 120 departments:
